make room for the silence

When people leave,
they rarely take the door with them,
they leave it open,
and somehow that hurts more.

One day,
your name stops appearing
in the places it used to live.
No calls.
No messages.
No “How are you?”
Just silence,
settling into the spaces
where love once sat.

Friends become strangers.
Family becomes a word
you hesitate to say.
And you learn that being related
does not always mean being remembered.

At first,
you count the days.
You reread old conversations.
You wonder what you did,
what you should have said,
whether one more apology
could have changed the ending.

Then, slowly,
you stop asking.

You stop waiting
for footsteps outside your life.
You stop checking the door
for people who have already left.

You adjust.

You learn to eat alone
without calling it loneliness.
You learn to celebrate quietly.
You learn that some stories
will end without explanations,
and some people
will become memories
without ever becoming apologies.

It is not that you stop caring.

You simply learn
to carry the ache differently.

You make room
for the silence.
You arrange your life around it.
You discover which parts of yourself
still remain
when everyone else has gone.

And one morning,
you wake up
and realize,

this is your life now.

Not the life you wanted.
Not the life you imagined.
But yours.

So you straighten the room.
Open the curtains.
Make your coffee.
Step into the day.

You stop calling absence
a temporary thing.

You call it reality.

And somehow,
without anyone returning,
you begin again.
